Review of Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Name Change Request

EVC Simmons submitted a request to rename the “Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry” within UC San Diego’s School of Physical Sciences to the “Department of Chemistry”. With the creation of the new Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, the requested change will align the current department’s name more closely with its current research and educational mission. No curricular, policy, or budget changes would result from this renaming.
A link to the proposal is provided in the Resources box. Faculty who wish to comment are welcome to do so. All comments received by December 19, 2025 will be included in the review materials for Senate Council consideration.
