Senate Chair Rebecca Jo Plant and Vice Chair Akos Rona-Tas are hosting quarterly coffee chats with Senate faculty at the Academic Senate Office (third floor of Center Hall, Room 315) to discuss current issues under discussion by the Academic Senate. The Spring quarter chat is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. 

The chat will be a listening session and conversation focusing on the experience of teaching in our current political and social media environment. Here in California, we have not experienced the kinds of state-sponsored censorship that our colleagues who teach in states like Texas are now facing, but faculty have nonetheless felt the chill of the current climate. At the same time, a host of factors, from doxxing to the threat of gun violence, have heightened faculty members’ sense of vulnerability in the classroom. This is especially true for faculty who teach on topics regarded as controversial. Come discuss these issues and share ideas on what role the Senate can play in equipping faculty to handle challenging classroom situations.
