The Senate Committee on Faculty Welfare (CFW) is concerned with a variety of issues that directly and indirectly affect the health, welfare and working conditions of all UCSD Faculty. In a narrow sense, the principal issues that CFW deals with are those related to faculty compensation, working conditions and benefits related to health and retirement. In a broader sense, the CFW views many other issues as falling within its domain such as affordable and available faculty housing, mechanisms of teaching evaluations, diversity, parking and transportation, and child care. While other Senate Committees may have primary responsibility for advising the Senate Council on some of these broader issues, those elements which directly affect the welfare of faculty, and their families, are viewed as being within the province of CFW responsibility. The CFW works closely with the University Committee on Faculty Welfare (UCFW), where our Division chapter of CFW has representation, and the Office of the President. CFW responds to requests from UCFW for opinions and positions, and initiates requests to UCFW for policy discussions and/or reviews. Membership on the San Diego CFW is determined by the Senate Committee on Committees and includes representation from the Emeriti Association. If any faculty member wishes to bring to the Committee’s attention an issue that they feel affects the overall welfare of the campus faculty, please contact Darlene Salmon in the Academic Senate Office at desalmon@ucsd.edu or Professor Joel Dimsdale, Chair, Committee on Faculty Welfare at jdimsdale@ucsd.edu.
